We diligently teach our children to name colors, count, and recognize letters. But what about the language of their own bodies? Interoception—the often-overlooked “eighth sense”—is our ability to perceive and understand the internal signals our body sends. It’s the feeling of a growling stomach, a parched throat, a racing heart, or the heavy warmth of fatigue. For children, whose inner worlds are a constant flux of new sensations, developing this skill is a cornerstone of emotional and physical wellbeing.

A child with underdeveloped interoception isn’t being “difficult” when they melt down suddenly. They may have missed the gradual cues of hunger, thirst, or overwhelm until it became an emergency. They might struggle to differentiate between the fluttery excitement of a birthday party and the tight anxiety of a first day at school. By giving them the tools to recognize these signals, we empower them with self-awareness and self-regulation.

So, how can we nurture this inner compass?

Become Body Detectives: Turn attention inward with playful, non-judgmental language. During quiet moments, ask: “Is your engine running high or low right now?” or “Let’s listen to what your tummy is saying.” Connect physical feelings to words: “Your face feels warm and your hands are in fists. That might be your body saying you’re frustrated.”

Connect Sensations to Solutions: Once a signal is named, link it to an action. “Your mouth is dry—that’s your body’s thirsty signal. Let’s get some water.” Or, “Your shoulders are tight and you’re yawning. That’s your body asking for a quiet break.” This builds a powerful cause-and-effect understanding.

Model Your Own Awareness: Narrate your own interoceptive experiences. “I’m feeling my heart beat fast because I’m running late, so I’m going to take a deep breath.” This demystifies internal processes and shows that everyone experiences these signals.

Building interoceptive awareness is a gentle, ongoing process. It’s about planting seeds of mindfulness that help your child move from being at the mercy of their sensations to becoming a confident navigator of their own remarkable body. By tuning in, they learn the most valuable lesson of all: how to listen to, trust, and care for themselves from the inside out.
